I am so sorry to find out so late that Doug Stern is gone. I was not somebody he knew personally. Prior to the 40th reunion I met him at the SOS a triathylon in the Shwangonks (not sure of spelling)outside of New Paltz, NY, I remember it was in 1995. My current husband participated in that race and it was such a coincidence to see Doug there, especially after so many years. He was the swimming coach. I met him at the pasta dinner before the race. I recognized him and asked him if he was a graduate of James Monroe H.S. and he said yes. We graduated the same year, 1961. My condolences to his family. Angela Mulcare Concklin
Doug passed away on June 25,2007 of Kidney Cancer. Based on comments in response to his death on Slowtwitch, the Triathlon Forum, he was highly regarded both as a trainer and a friend. Doug's influence on swimmers and triathletes was tremendous. He ran an annual triathlon training camp, with a focus on swimming, at the Lion's Dive Hotel on the island of Curacao. In his memory, the hotel built a 3 lane, 50 meter infinity pool, a training pool for triathletes and multi-sport athletes, called the Doug Stern Memorial Pool. A yearly run, The Jingle Bell Run, is held each December in his memory in Manhattan.
